TEMPLE OF LITERATURE

KNOWN AS VIETNAM’S FIRST UNIVERSITY, HANOI’S TEMPLE OF LITERATURE WAS BUILT IN THE EARLY 11TH CENTURY IN HONOUR OF CONFUCIUS, HIS FOLLOWERS AND CHU VAN AN, AN ETHIAL SCHOLAR IN VIETNAMESE TUITION. THE TEMPLE FEATURES FIVE COURTYARDS, OF WHICH THE THIRD COURTYARD IS HOME TO 82 PRESERVED STONE SLABS ETCHED WITH THE NAMES OF 1,307 GRADUATES OF 82 TRIENNIAL ROYAL EXAMS. CHECK OUT THE STONE STELAE WHERE THOSE WHO PASSED THE NOTORIOUSLY DIFFICULT EXAMS HAVE HAD THEIR NAMES CARVED FOR ETERNITY. THE STONE TURTLES ARE WELL-RUBBED AS THEY OFFER GOOD LUCK TO THOSE IN NEED OF KNOWLEDGE.

HOA LO PRISON

REFERRED TO IRONICALLY AS THE ‘HANOI HILTON’ BY AMERICAN POWS, HOA LO PRISON WAS BUILT BY THE FRENCH IN 1896 AND USED TO HOUSE VIETNAMESE POLITICAL PRISONERS. THE PRISON WAS JUST ONE IN A SERIES OF NORTHERN INCARCERATION CENTERS. BY 1954 THERE WERE OVER 2000 INMATES WITHIN THE COLD, DAMP WALLS OF HOA LO AND THE JAIL HAD BECOME, IN THE EYES OF THE VIETNAMESE, AN EMBLEM OF COLONIALIST ABUSE AND BETRAYAL. CHILLING DISPLAYS INCLUDE NASTY INSTRUMENTS OF TORTURE AND RESTORED PRISON CELLS

NGỌC SƠN TEMPLE IS IN THE CENTER OF HÀ NỘI ON A SMALL ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF HOÀN KIẾM LAKE. BEING BUILT ON THE JADE ISLET AND DEDICATED TO CONFUCIAN AND TAOIST PHILOSOPHERS AND THE NATIONAL HERO, TRẦN HƯNG ĐẠO, THE SMALL TEMPLE WAS EXPANDED IN 1865.
